Reconnect

The Reconnect Program is a Federally funded program to assist youth at risk of homelessness and their families. Relationships between young people and their families are supported through counseling, mediation and practical support.   With a focus on early intervention, the program facilitates groups to build on parenting and problem-solving skills.  Information workshops on a wide range of topics also provide relevant information to assist with relationship building.

The Anglican Community Care Reconnect Program is located in Murray Bridge and services the rural Murray Mallee.

Outdoor Classroom©

Piccaninnie & Ewens Ponds to become Outdoor Classrooms©.

A group of Year  7 to Year 9 students is about to embark upon an outdoor classroom project involving local tourist parks, such as Piccaninnie and Ewens Ponds, to tackle environmental and conservation work whilst studying to obtain the South Australian Certificate of Education.

‘The Outdoor Classroom© has been established to enhance student learning opportunities through their active participation in hands-on competency based learning, recognising that solely academic methods of education do not suit all young people’ said Graham Holloway, Programme Coordinator, Anglican Community Care Inc.

The partnership with Anglican Community Care Inc (management of the project), Tenison Woods College (the students and teacher) and the Department of Environment & Heritage (work programme) and support from The George Alexander Foundation enables children to realise educational and environmental opportunities they may otherwise not obtain. The George Alexander Foundation’s grant of $36,000  provides nine young people with such a vocational educational opportunity.

‘There are benefits to students and the broader community from such an initiative’ said Graham. ‘Students benefit from renewed motivation and increased self-esteem, skill development in team building, decision making and leadership, practical work related skills, greater understanding of regional environment and conservation issues. The community benefits by young people working and learning in partnerships with organisations such as the National Parks and Wild Life Service, Friends of Mount Gambier Parks and Friends of Shorebirds. Important environment and conservation work is completed to benefit everyone in the community, including our tourism industry. Students will learn about the importance and advantages of contributing to a community and when young people are involved in communities we build stronger communities’ continued Graham.

The students will have a dedicated teacher, John Skelly, from Tenison Woods College and achieve up to two units of the South Australian Certificate in Education.

Tenison Woods College Principal Pam Ronan said ‘the Outdoors Classroom Programme is a great innovation in using workplace learning for Middle School students. The program will help schools in the Limestone Coast region understand how to create meaningful alternative programmes for students.'

‘The program also allows students undertaking the program to receive important life skills as well as achieving educational and employment goals’ continued Ms Ronan.

The Outdoor Classroom will include a range of projects, such as the removal of the broom weed from Telford Scrub, track trimming at Piccaninnie Ponds and Penambol, planting of Stringy Bark trees in McKenna and Telfords Scrub, wader catching and banding with Friends of Shorebirds, water monitoring at Ewens Ponds and seed collection at Picks Swamp.

No interest lots of interest.

New low interest loans for the Millicent community.

New no interest loans are being offered to the Millicent community by Anglican Community Care through the Millicent Community Services Centre.

These new loans are now available to more people on low incomes due to the broadening of the eligibility criteria because too many people were missing out on the previous loans. No Interest Loans Scheme (NILS®) provides up to $800.00 giving people in the local community an opportunity to purchase whitegoods or essential household furniture or medical equipment. Individuals or families are eligible for the NILS® if they have a health card or are receiving a Centrelink payment and have been living in the South East for at least six (6) months.

Anglican Community Care is able to provide these loans due to receiving a $15,000 grant from the Ian Potter Foundation. The re-payments of the loans make it possible for the fund to be recycled, enabling the loans to continue so other individuals and families are able to apply.

Kelly Gribben from Anglican Community Care said ‘’the criteria to apply for the loans was changed because we recognise there are many more people within our community who are on a low income and whose lives would be greatly improved if they could access these no interest loans to purchase essential items. NILS® provides an opportunity for those who are excluded from mainstream financial systems to purchase essential items. This opportunity has a significant positive financial impact upon the lives of these individuals and families.’

To enquire about the no interest loans contact the Millicent Community Service Centre on 8733 3011.
